Fairness Doctorine version 2.0?

Along with the conservative fears that America is headed for socialism, they also seem to believe that the Fairness Doctrine will be reinstated. "We want to serve notice with the Broadcaster Freedom Act that we as Republicans are drawing a line in the sand and I hope this won't just be Republicans," DeMint said. "We're looking for Democratic co-sponsors, but we are not going to allow this rule to be reenacted either by the FCC, by the Obama administration or by Congress.
"There is evidence in the past that administrations of both parties have used the Fairness Doctrine to go after people they oppose by threatening their licenses when those licenses were up for renewal," Walden said. "And that's the core of the issue here - is that government bureaucrats will decide whether a broadcast station owner gets his license or her license again - or is somehow punished for not having exactly the right other view on the airwaves."

Is this really a rational fear? Is the Obama administration really going to go around and shut down every radio station that opposes their views? As discussed in our debate on Wednesday I believe that it is the media's job to check government and sometime oppose what our government is doing. However conservative radio stations are making a killing during these times, striking fear in the minds of Americans everywhere. I honestly do no t believe that this bill will see the light of day, I honestly believe that it opposes the first amendment and that this is just another fear tactic.

  1. I fully agree with your statement that this seems to be yet another fear tactic the conservative media is using to fire others up. I just can't see how the current administration could find time to worry about those who are using their first amendment rights to voice their opinions. The end of free radio seems to be a more likely thing to happen at this point, which in turn would change much of radios formatting, but not in a partisan sense. Ahh the silliness we see each day, and thank you for "reading between the lines". The only ones we have to trust are ourselves and the instincts we were given.

  2. You make good points....Conservatives always say the media has liberal bias....but guess who opposes the fairness doctrine? Conservatives. If they want more balance on air, why not support it, just a hypocritical stance.
